In Loving Memory of Scott Vehill

You can learn more about Scott’s impact on theater in Chicago and the world via this excerpt from the eulogy Executive Director, Nan Barnett, shared on behalf of NNPN:

Scott Vehill was a man who lived large – large opinions, larger laughs, and the largest of hugs. He enjoyed this large life, with a large group of friends and collaborators, a large sense of humor, and a really large curiosity for the “what ifs” in life.

So, when that “what if” was “what if there was a way to take locally made theater to nation-wide audiences,” Scott was right there for an exploration of what was possible. He soon became a vocal champion of the idea that not only was sharing these works possible, it was vital to the artists and audiences of America.

His arguments for the power of collaboration and collegiality, his drive and desire to get things done – plays produced, artists uplifted, conversations continued, a good time had – and his love for those who did those things, were all large. He planted and then nourished a seed that became National New Play Network. NNPN’s Member Theaters now serve over a million people a year. Plays that NNPN has supported are seen in hundreds of productions each year all around the world.

And so, along with the present and past Board, staff, and Member Theaters of National New Play Network, as well as the artists and audiences internationally who have been and will be touched by the fruits of Scott’s curiosity, collaborative spirit, and continuing legacy – an impact on theater and the lives of those who love it that’s large – larger than anyone can measure:

To Scott Vehill, thank you.

A Spark of Collaboration that Launched NNPN

In 1998, I was in Chicago to see a play called “1001 Afternoons in Chicago” which was written by my godson, Paul Peditto, and presented by PROP Thtr.

I wasn't expecting much, but then was blown away by a first rate production. This led me to find out who the producers were. This is how I met Scott Vehill who, along with his co producer, put together plays from the basement of his house.

That single experience got me wondering how many theatres across the country put on really good new plays that ran for maybe six weeks and were never seen again. This led directly to the creation of the NNPN, and years of working with Scott.
